Martin Whybrow was born in Manchester to a very musical Salvation Army family. During his time in the Norwich Citadel Salvation Army band, he was principal tuba and toured the United States of America, Canada and Norway. This would be valuable experience for his later military music career.
In 1991 he joined The Band of The Life Guards performing on tuba at many State Occasions and also played violin on investitures. In 2008 he was promoted to Staff Seargent and posted to the Royal Military School of Music (RMSM), Kneller Hall, as a Phase II Instructor.
After a successful tour at RMSM, he was posted to the Royal Artillery Band in 2010 and was promoted to Warrant Officer Class 2 and later appointed as the Band Sergeant Major (BSM) in 2011. During his time as BSM he organised a tour to Afghanistan where the band supported Gary Barlow, Katharine Jenkins and other musical support to Op HERRICK 19. In 2014 he was posted to the King’s Division Band where his previous experience helped him to establish the first of the Corps of Army Music’s (CAMUS, later The Royal Corps of Army Music – RCAM) flagship brass bands. In 2017, he was promoted to Warrant Officer Class 1 and appointed as the Personnel Selection Officer. Then in 2019, Martin was appointed as the Corps Sergeant Major, RCAM.
In 2021 he left Regular Service and joined the Royal Yeomanry Band were he still serves as a tuba player.
During his Army Service, Martin is proud to have visited the following countries in the course of his duties: USA, Canada, New Zealand Russia, Morocco, Algeria, Holland, Afghanistan (HERRICK 19), India, Italy, France, Jordan, Botswana and South Africa, Cyprus, Uganda, Latvia, and Lithuania, Djibouti and Ethiopia. Dubai, Sweden, Finland, Morocco, Italy, France, Belgium, Germany, Sweden, Botswana, Uganda.
Martin has also performed in championship brass bands and toured the Far East with Desford Colliery Band.
